30 Dirty Players in 30 Days. The Boston Bruins I went through many candidates when trying to nail down the dirtiest player from the Boston Bruins 85 year history in the NHL. Eddie Shore, Ted Green, Terry O’Reilly and Mike Milbury all popped into my mind and onto my browser as I tried to select the perfect example of cheap, dirty hockey. However, in the end there was no one that seemed cheaper than Ken Linseman. While he never caved in anyone's skull like Shore or jumped into the stands to beat on fans like O'Reilly, Linseman did manage to get convicted of assault by kicking an opposing player in the forehead with his skate. Once he got up to the bigs, "The Rat" became famous for starting scrums and then skating away from them like a ... well, like a rat. Not a big man, Linseman became the master of the slash, spear and crosscheck. The Dallas Stars The dirtiest player to play for the Dallas Stars is Steve Ott.Why do I say Steve Ott? Well I figure 324 NHL players can't be wrong. A Sports Illustrated poll of 324 players that is to appear in this week's issue has Anaheim Ducks defenceman Pronger and Dallas Stars forward Ott in a tie [for the league's dirtiest player].Some Dallas Fans don't agree. Brandon Worley at Defending Big D says "It's still surprising though to think of Ott as a dirty player (whatever it is exactly which consitutes "dirty"). Now I know what you're thinking. Marty is an enforcer, that's why he racks up the penalty minutes. And an enforcer is not necessarily a dirty player. They have honor, they fight fair, the follow "the code". 30 Dirty Players in 30 Days. The Minnesota Wild Derek Boogaard is regarded as one of the toughest guys in the NHL. He has scored 10 points in 200 games with the Minnesota wild while racking up over 400 penalty minutes in the same timeframe. There is no question as to what is role is. He is on the team to fight, protect his team and to occasionally elbow people to the head. And now his role has diversified. Boorgaard has become a mentor for young kids who want to learn to fight. Boorgaard runs the Derek Boogaard Fighting Camp for kids. 30 Dirty Players in 30 Days. The Montreal Canadiens Chris "Knuckles" Nilan holds the record for the most penalty minutes per game. Over 16 seasons, Nilan averaged 4.42 penalty minutes per game. That's just shy of a fighting major in every NHL game he ever played in.Nilan knows how to get everything out of a game. He holds the NHL record for penalties in a game with 10. He holds the team record for most penalty minutes in a game for both the Montreal Canadiens (39 PIM) and the New York Rangers (35 PIM). I know, I know, broken record. Penalty minutes don't equal dirty play. But come on. 4 and a half minutes per game over his entire career? Sure, lots of fighting majors and misconducts make up that number, but you have to think that a lot of those minutes are from dirty plays like butt-ending, suckerpunching and puck throwing. Puck throwing? 30 Dirty Players in 30 Days. The Nashville Predators In an article about his reckless style of play, the Edmonton Journal asks whether Jordin Tootoo is " a hard, compact, ball of hate or an old-fashioned, finish-the-check hardrock player". My opinion? Ball of hate. And Nashville's dirtiest player. Tootoo's modus operandi is to seek out situations where a player has the puck but is not aware of his presence. Then he charges his opponent as fast as he can and surprises him with the hardest hit possible. He is interested in the puck, but only in the sense that he needs to make sure it is close by so he does not get a penalty. Taking control of the the puck, or getting it to a teammate is not what Tootoo is about. He's all about the hit. Admittedly, Tootoo's hits are usually with the shoulder and technically legal. But let's be honest, Tootoo's hits have "intent to injure" written all over them. 30 Dirty Players in 30 Days. The New Jersey Devils It was never a question of if he would show up on my dirty player list, it was a question of under what team. Since Claude Lemieux is arguably the dirtiest player to ever play the game, he is technically the dirtiest player for Montreal, New Jersey, Colorado, Phoenix and briefly for Dallas and San Jose. However, it would have been a pretty dull feature if I duplicated players across teams. I mean, how long can you watch video clips of Chris Pronger, Claude Lemieux and Ken Linseman before getting bored. So I had to pick a single team for Claude. And I am sorry New Jersey, but he stuck to you. |
