You've probably seen the highlight reel shootout goal by Oiler rookie Linus Omark. Spin-o-tama, fake, then five-hole to beat Tampa goalie, Dan Ellis. But have you heard about the reaction from the Tampa players and Dan Ellis?
"It's embarrassing for him," Ellis said. "You come into a league, a respectful league like this, and you try a little move like that. It's not a very classy thing. That's just the kind of person he is."
Wait a second Dan. He did more than "try" his little move on you. He scored. Which (correct me if I am wrong) is the goal of the player on the shootout. What am I missing?
Who is the dirtiest hockey man to ever play in the City of Edmonton? Who is the cheapest, dirtiest, and most detested person to ever be associated with the Oilers?
Well, he never actually laced up the skates for the Oil, so I'm kind of cheating. But I think all Edmonton Oilers fans, save maybe his parents, would agree that Edmonton's big dirty is Peter Pocklington.
With 182 penalty minutes in his first 87 NHL games, Mike Danton's role in the NHL seemed to be heading towards that of a 4th line checker or an enforcer. It is possible that he would have become a player dirty enough to be featured in my 30 Dirty Players feature. However, we'll never know. We won't know because Danton's NHL career was ambushed by a player far dirtier than he will ever be.
