Free Box Pool. Where are my favorite players? I've been getting some emails regarding our choices for the free box style hockey pool. My apologies to anyone who is finding their favorite player missing from the boxes. Now I know how Steve Yzerman of Team Canada feels. The hottest topic has been Henrik Zetterberg. I've had a few irate Red Wings fans wondering where their star player is. Despite a lower point total last year, Armchair Pools predicts Zetterberg to bounce back this year and score similar points to his linemate Pavel Datzyuk. Being a Canucks fan, I am all too familiar with the old Datsyuk to Zetterberg, Canucks lose again combination. So because we figure they will score similar points, we only put Datsyuk in the box. We did the same thing with Henrik and Daniel Sedin. And if you wonder how I picked between Henrik and Daniel - I picked the better looking one.
Two potential linemates that I did keep in the same box are Daniel Alfredsson and Jason Spezza. Why? Because who knows what the hell is happening in Ottawa and whether Spezza or Alfredsson will show up or not. Personally, I'd pick Eric Staal over both of them because he's a safer pick, but I digress ... In the goalie department, Big Louie is missing. No doubt Roberto Luongo is one of the leagues best goalies - if not the best. Which makes me sad to predict that the Canucks will stink so much this year that his wins and shutouts will be lower than that of the guy who pushed him from our selection box, Niklas Backstrom. If you disagree with my goalie predictions, just talk to the people in my 2007/08 playoff pool. They'll grudgingly tell you about how I predicted Dominic Hasek to falter and picked backup goalie Chris Osgood as the last pick in our draft. Osgood and the Wings won the cup, and I walked away with our pool. Again, I digress. If you are looking for a more flexible pool, Armchair Pools does offer a standard hockey pool that is completely flexible. You can define team sizes, team profiles, scoring rules, etc. And you can pick any NHL player. It is $20 CAD but has a 3 week free trial that doesn't kick in until Oct 1 (ie if you create a pool now, it is free until the 3rd week of October).
