The NHL.com's 30-in-30 feature on the
St Louis Blues talks a about the Blue's past. My feature talks about the past of the dirtiest player to ever be associated with the team
With 182 penalty minutes in his first 87 NHL games, Mike Danton's role in the NHL seemed to be heading towards that of a 4th line checker or an enforcer. It is possible that he would have become a player dirty enough to be featured in my 30 Dirty Players feature. However, we'll never know. We won't know because Danton's NHL career was ambushed by a player far dirtier than he will ever be.
His agent, David Frost.
If you aren't familiar with the story, the CBC has a lot of
coverage on it. Also, the Fifth Estate did a
documentary called 'Frost Bite' that looks into Frost and his past. There are more details here than I can - or care to - write about.
Frost became Danton's mentor at the young age of 10 and later became his agent - helping him realize his childhood dream of playing in the NHL. After his first full year in the NHL, Danton attempted to hire a hit man to kill David Frost. On Nov 8, 2004, he was arrested and sentenced to 7 years in prison. The question on everybody's mind - who was David Frost and why did Mike Danton want him dead.
It didn't take long for the answer. As the story broke, details emerged that suggested Frost had been physically and mentally abusing young hockey players - including Danton - from an early age. He was accused of using his position of authority to manipulate and control players in his care for personal benefit. There was even suggestion that he used brainwashing techniques to exert control over the youngsters.
From
artvoice.comAt age 13, [Danton's brother] Tom was allowed to take part in a weekend retreat at Frost’s cottage in Kingston, attended also by his older brother Mike and other boys. Upon returning home, Tom was sullen and withdrawn, and the parents eventually discovered photographs of their naked 13-year-old son bound to a bed with duct tape, photos taken at Frost’s retreat. Further details of that weekend emerged. Tom was forced to eat pancakes that were spat on by Frost; he was shot at with a BB gun while hanging from a tree branch; he was also ordered to dance naked atop a table for hours.

The whole team noticed it: How Frost would order [Danton] to grab him a glass of water and the boy would oblige and how [Danton] would fetch Frost's inhaler at the coach's command. "It was like a dog going to get his master's paper," says Corey Batten, the [team's] goalie.
Of course, like a good dirty player Frost denies it all.
"I've heard the brainwash stuff, that I brainwash players," he told the Toronto Sun. "Maybe I have brainwashed them. You know how crazy that is? If I was that smart, I would brainwash 20 of them and we would go win the Stanley Cup. Brainwashing? When I hear that cult stuff, it makes me crazy."
But he can't deny the audio recordings of conversations between him and Mike Danton. Have a
listen and decide for yourself who David Frost is.
My opinion, dirty.
