NHL.com has their 30-in-30 schedule posted. You can find their article on the San Jose Sharks as well as previous articles
here.
In past entries in my 30 Dirty Players feature, I have tried to come up with something special about each player. Something different, so that the article is not just one big laundry list of suspensions and dirty hits. I tried to focus on what element made me consider that player "dirty".
The only thing special about Bryan Marchment is the sheer magnitude of his dirty play. Over his 15 year career, he amassed 2307 penalty minutes and, according to
Wikipedia, was suspended 13 times. Although I could "only" find proof of 10.
Update: Thanks to Mayor Bee at hfboards.com, I was able to find my
missing 3 suspensions.
So with out further ado, the very dirty laundry list of Bryan Marchment.
1993
- Suspended two games for
checking Mike Gartner of the Rangers from behind.
- Suspended one game for receiving his third non-stick-related misconduct of the season.
1995
- Suspended five games for a
kneeing incident against the Jets Jason Simon.
- Hit Mike Gartner at center ice and
collapsed his lung. Marchment would later state that the hit was payback for a previous high stick from Gartner.
- Suspended twice for a total of 3 games for receiving game misconduct penalties.
- Suspended three games leaving the bench to fight Denis Chasse of St. Louis.
1997
- Suspended three games
for kneeing Mike Modano. The hit kept Dallas Stars Mike Modano out for six weeks.
1998
- Suspended eight games
for kneeing Carolina Hurricanes forward Kevin Dineen. The suspension was the longest of the season.
- Suspended one game for
directing racial comments at Donald Brashear.
1999
- Suspended three games for
spearing Paul Kariya in the stomach.
2000
- Suspended three games
for kneeing Montreal Canadiens forward Martin Rucinsky in a game Monday night.
2001
- Suspended six games for
elbowing Carolina Hurricanes forward Shane Willis in the head.
- Suspended two games after his
third fight-instigator penalty of the season.
In a
Sports Illustrated article, Marchment had this to say about his reputation as a dirty player. "Your brain's telling you to stick your leg out because he'll get by you, have a breakaway, make you look like an idiot" Says Marchment. "If that's something dirty, so be it."
Yes Bryan, so be it dirty. Tell your brain not to be an idiot.
