NHL.com has their 30-in-30 schedule posted. You can find their article on the Pittsburgh Penguins as well as previous articles here.
In just over 1000 NHL games, Ulf Samuelsson was able to accumulate 2453 penalty minutes - a respectable 25th on the NHL's all time penalty minutes. Not known as a fighter, Samuelsson gathered his penalty minutes with dirty checks and cheapshots. He had a reputation for hitting opponents with dangerous knee-on-knee hits. This reputation was mostly attributed to the fact that he regularly did hit his opponents with dangerous knee-on-knee hits.
In this undated Coaches Corner segment, Don Cherry gives a thorough rundown on Samuelsson's knee checks and makes you wonder what is worse - Ulf Samuelsson's respect for fair play, or Don's ability to speak in full sentences. I'd give the nod to Ulf, but just barely. While Samuelsson was famous for his knee hits, he was also not afraid to throw the odd slewfoot or headbutt.
Samuelsson retired at the end of the NHL's 2000 season. Forwards across the league breathed a collective sigh of relief as the era of the dirty Samuelsson knee check came to an end. But times may be changing. In the 2009 entry draft, the Pittsburgh Penguins selected Ulf's son, Chicago Steel defenseman Philip Samuelsson, 61st overall. Does dirty play run in the family? Check out the clip below and decide for yourself.
Note that Phil's last crosscheck was after the game had ended and the unsuspecting 6 year old was on his way to the locker room.
Watch your knees, class of 2009. Samuelsson is back.
