The NHL.com's
30-in-30 feature on the Phoenix coyotes discusses the poor performance last year and outlines their plan to step out of the cellar and become a winning product.
It is fitting that Phoenix - a team perpetually stuck in the bottom of the standings and mired in underachievement - would not be able to produce a quality dirty player.
Tyson Nash played 7 seasons in the NHL and collected 673 penalty minutes. He wasn't an exceptionally violent player, I could only find one instance of a suspension over his career and there are no famous stories of cheap hits. He wasn't known as a fighter. In fact he had a reputation for being good at avoiding fights. His Wikipedia entry is so empty that you don't have to scroll to see it in it's entirety. According to
his website, a major highlight in 2005 was having "abdominal surgery by Dr. William Myers in Philadelphia".
So what the hell did he do?
Well, he certainly didn't score. "Nasher's" season high point total was 15 and he only had 64 over his entire career.
Sportsnet.ca categorized him as a "4th line agitator who does a bit too much trash-talking on the ice and occasionally hurts his team by taking bad penalties".
So what he did was annoy people. Whether it was
running around giving cheap hits, shooting his mouth off, or wearing his hair in a manner that made you want to take a 5 minute spearing penalty, Nash got under your skin.
And that's all he did. That's it. Then he retired and
played in Japan. I really have nothing else to say about him.
