Two great shootouts, one upset and a crash course in the quirks of international hockey statistics.
The games for the 18th are all loaded. Here are a few notes on international shootout scoring statistics and how they apply to our Olympic hockey pools. Also check out the late boxscore corrections listed below.
Shootout Goals
Apparently, the winning goal in an international shootout counts towards a player's overall totals. For our Olympic pools, we are going to follow the IIHF rules on this topic so that the player stats on our site match the
official IIHF stats. So in other words, if you have Sidney Crosby or Pavol Demitra you picked up an extra point last night.
Overtime Wins/Losses
Since we have no Overtime Win or Overtime Loss statistic category for the Olympics, we are going to consider a win by any means a win, and do the same for a loss. If I had to set thing sup over again, I would have built an OTW and OTL category and populated them as per the IIHF rules. This a mistake caused by my ignorance of international hockey. My apologies.
Late boxscore changes
Paul Stastny was originally credited with an assist on one of Brian Rafalski's goals. It was later changed and awarded to Phil Kessel. Some media outlets have not corrected this change.
